Statements in the House

Question O173-12(1): Lake Harbour Airport December 17th, 1991

(Translation) Thank you, Mr. Speaker. My question is for the Minister of Transportation. I realize he provided me with an answer but I would like to add to my earlier question concerning the safety of the airstrip. However this has been a concern even prior to my becoming an MLA. I wonder if I will receive a more positive response in the future? Has there been anything put into the capital plans to provide for upgrading of the airstrip in Lake Harbour?

Question O139-12(1): People Who Die Without Wills December 16th, 1991

(Translation) Thank you, Mr. Speaker. I have a question to the Minister of Social Services. When a grandmother dies and leaves behind grandchildren, the descendants who are then living receive inheritances.

Question O138-12(1): Funding For Outfitting Courses December 16th, 1991

We have some students from our regions taking economic development-related courses. I understand they are taking outfitting courses. I understand they will be finished in March. I understand the funding for those programs will be cut off. I want further information on this. Thank you, Mr. Speaker.

Question O137-12(1): Plans For Encouraging Economic Development In Baffin December 16th, 1991

(Translation) Thank you, Mr. Speaker. I have a question for the Minister of Economic Development and Tourism. Economic development is on the rise in the Baffin. Tourism in Cape Dorset has fully progressed. A lot of the businesses that were involved in outfitting were running very well but they are not any more. However, outside of Cape Dorset this activity is on a downslide again. Do they still have plans to encourage economic development activity within the Baffin area, to encourage outfitters and tourism?

Motion 26-12(1): Contribution To The NWT Council For Disabled Persons December 15th, 1991

(Translation) Thank you, Mr. Speaker. I would like to support the motion. In our constituency it is difficult to care for these disabled persons and the elders. It is important that we understand that they should have a good place. I realize that we are short of money, but I feel we should think seriously about this very important item. Thank you, Mr. Speaker.

Question O104-12(1): Lighting For Airstrip, Lake Harbour December 12th, 1991

(Translation) Thank you, Mr. Speaker. My question is for the Minister of Transportation about the airstrip in Lake Harbour. I would like to add further to my question regarding the lighting addition to our airstrip. They have a lot of problems when they try and land during the night when there is no light. I just wanted to make that supplementary to the Minister of Transportation. Thank you, Mr. Speaker.

Autopsy In 1960s December 12th, 1991

(Translation) Thank you, Mr. Speaker. I was not present yesterday. I was very ill yesterday, but I am feeling a little better today, and I am happy I could be present. I came here yesterday for a while but I could not do the work because I was so ill. That is my apology to you. I want to be present as much as I can when I am here. As you know, I am very new and I know there are going to be a lot of things that I will have to learn. I am not happy I was not able to come yesterday, but it could not be helped because I was ill.

RCMP did not give me any documentation. They just told me it was all right. That is all I wanted to say, Mr. Speaker. Thank you.

Item 9: Petitions December 10th, 1991

(Translation) Thank you, Mr. Speaker. I have Petition 2-12(1) with regard to northern people that run their own business. I would like to be quite clear, Mr. Speaker, but it has something to do with the power rates. This petition probably affects all the NWT residents, but it is the business people that are worried about having to pay high power bills. Thank you, Mr. Speaker.

Question O43-12(1): Status Of School For Lake Harbour December 10th, 1991

(Translation) Thank you, Mr. Speaker. This has been a concern for some time by my constituents. There have been deaths of students who are out of our community. There are a lot of people who go outside of our community to go to school. I do not want an answer right now, but perhaps later on. Our school was deferred to be completed in 1992. There are a lot of students who are enroling in that school in my community and there is not enough room in the school now. It is very hard for the parents of the community when their children have to go to school outside the community. Can the department assure me that the school in my community will not be deferred again?

Question O33-12(1): Lake Harbour Airstrip December 10th, 1991

(Translation) Thank you, Mr. Speaker. My question is directed to the Minister of Transportation in regard to the airstrip in our community. There has been a concern for many years in our community. It is not just because it is too short, but it is also not on even ground and it is dangerous. There have been concerns about the danger of this airstrip. We have been asking for improvements to be made to our airstrip before a major accident occurs. Thank you, Mr. Speaker.
