Question 49-17(1): High Occurrence Of Cancer Diagnoses In Fort Good Hope December 11th, 2011

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. The Premier has promised to take action to address the

low employment rate in our small communities with large projects. In Aklavik the employment rate is 36 percent. That is below the territory’s average, which is 67 percent. There is simply more people who need work than there are jobs, but we do have one project that is on our government’s red flag priority list A. That is the all-weather access road to the Willow River gravel source.

Honourable Premier, when will construction begin on this project during the 17th Assembly? Thank

you, Mr. Speaker.

Recognition of Visitors in the Gallery December 11th, 2011

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. I had an acknowledgement that I would like to address.

Christmas Celebrations At Mackenzie Delta Schools December 11th, 2011

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. I would like to acknowledge the students throughout the NWT attending school and preparing for their individual Christmas concerts. Our families enjoy gathering at the school and take pride in watching their children take part in many skits, the Christmas stories and the carolling throughout the evening.

In many of our communities it is the time to dress up in traditional clothing, new mukluks, new mitts and smaller traditional gifts from their mother,

grandmother or aunties. The highlight of the night is when Santa shows up with treats for everyone.

I would like to apologize to the staff and students at the Chief Paul Niditchie School, Chief Julius School and Moose Kerr School, all of which are preparing for their Christmas concerts on Wednesday evening. I will not be able to attend due to timing. However, I would like to extend my best wishes to all of the students. I know that they will make their families proud. Thank you, Mr. Speaker.

Question 31-17(1): Home Care Services In Mackenzie Delta December 8th, 2011

At this time I have no further questions. Thank you, Mr. Minister.

Question 31-17(1): Home Care Services In Mackenzie Delta December 8th, 2011

It was very unclear what the plans were for Fort McPherson and I would just like a little more follow-up on that. Are there plans to increase the amount of workers there? Thank you.

Question 31-17(1): Home Care Services In Mackenzie Delta December 8th, 2011

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Today I have a question for the Minister of Health as to home care. Will the Minister, as an interim solution until we re-establish the long-term care facility in the Mackenzie Delta district, increase the amount of home care workers in the communities of Aklavik, Fort McPherson and Tsiigehtchic? Thank you, Mr. Speaker.

Question 27-17(1): Funding For Youth Programs December 7th, 2011

I have no further questions.

Question 27-17(1): Funding For Youth Programs December 7th, 2011

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Today I have a question for the Minister responsible for Youth.

The communities I represent, the funding levels for youth, the most one community gets is $25,000; the others receive less. I was just wondering what their plans are in the next year if we plan to increase that amount.

Arctic Winter Games Territorial Trials December 7th, 2011

: Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Today I would like to recognize the coaches, chaperones, officials and volunteers that have been instrumental in preparing for this weekend’s territorial trials leading to the Arctic Winter Games. Athletes from the Mackenzie Delta will be travelling to participate in various sporting events, competing against the four other regions.

I would like to acknowledge the determination and the will from each of the athletes to represent Team NWT at the Arctic Winter Games in Whitehorse.

The territorial trials has always been successful, not only in naming the top athletes but it is a way for our athletes to learn more about the sport, to individually excel and, most importantly, to make lifelong friends.

I would like for the Members and the Ministers to join me in wishing all the athletes good luck, try hard and have fun. Thank you, Mr. Speaker.

Consideration in Committee of the Whole of Bills and other Matters December 6th, 2011

Thank you. As I mentioned before, I really disagree with the process, but I do realize at the end of our term we’ll be setting priorities for the next 18

th government. So I just wanted to state that.

I’m hoping that within the next year here, in the fall, we have the new school on our agenda for the community of Aklavik. As I mentioned, it’s getting

close to 40 years old and I believe it’s well above the 28-year assessment needs.

I do realize in history with this government the Mackenzie Delta is getting not very much in terms of projects. I know there’s a bunch of renovations planned. I’d like to see change before our February budget. It needs to match our priorities and I hope to see those changes. Thank you.
