Item 4: Returns To Oral Questions March 10th, 1992

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. I have a return to an oral question, Question O285-12(2), asked by Mr. Pudluk on March 9, 1992, on local input in study of Peary caribou. The survey of the Peary caribou in the High Arctic is being conducted by Dr. Frank Miller from the Canadian Wildlife Service. The study is part of a federal/territorial research program organized under the RENEW, recovery of nationally endangered wildlife, program. A biologist from the Department of Renewable Resources is the chairman of the Peary caribou RENEW program.

The communities are aware of this research program and know Dr. Miller, who has done research on Peary caribou in the High Arctic for many years. However, to ensure that Dr. Miller is aware of the concerns raised by Mr. Pudluk, the Department of Renewable Resources is writing a letter to Dr. Miller. The department will ask him to contact the communities before the survey is conducted to discuss their

concerns. The Department of Renewable Resources is as concerned as the residents of the High Arctic about the future of the Peary caribou. I would like to commend the communities for their conservation efforts and for their interest and support in the RENEW research program. Thank you.

Question O285-12(2): Local Input In Study Of Peary Caribou March 8th, 1992

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. One mandate in my department is to inform the communities whenever a survey of that kind is being done around the community. One of the things that we like to do is get the communities involved in the surveys and studies. The main purpose of this is to protect the wildlife. As the Member stated in his Member's statement, May is the wrong time of the year. At this time I am not aware of the group that is going over to that area, but I will get back to the Member and take this part of the question as notice.

Question O282-12(2): Types Of Trees In Liard Valley March 5th, 1992

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. I believe we have poplar, white spruce, black spruce, and jack pine. Jack pine, Mr. Speaker, was selected in 1989 as the official tree of the Territories.

Question O281-12(2): Michelangelo Virus March 5th, 1992

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. We were concerned about this when we were informed. We wanted to unhook the cables into the wall until the time passes, and we also wanted to try and get a doctor in to fix them. All departments are advised in this regard, Mr. Speaker. Thank you.

Question O279-12(2): Issuing Of Shrimp Licences March 5th, 1992

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. It is my understanding, Mr. Speaker, that it is considered as an unutilized species. I believe that it is excluded from this area. Thank you.

Question O279-12(2): Issuing Of Shrimp Licences March 5th, 1992

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. When my deputy had a discussion with Honorable John Crosbie in Vancouver, he stated that no new shrimp licences will be allocated in the North Atlantic Ocean. Thank you.

Question O275-12(2): Tabling Of Canadian Forest Strategy March 5th, 1992

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. As soon as I can.

Question O275-12(2): Tabling Of Canadian Forest Strategy March 5th, 1992

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Yes, Mr. Speaker.

Question O273-12(2): Optional Years For Evergreen Forestry March 5th, 1992

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. I am still new in the Department of Renewable Resources dealing with forestry, and I am very interested in the area of forestry, although I came from an area with no trees. I am also very interested in community concerns regarding this forestry issue. Mr. Speaker, I thank the Member for asking the question. I will review the matter with my officials and get back to the

Member, and I hope I will be able to deal with this matter positively for the Member's benefit. Thank you.
