Question 582-12(7): Response To Nunavut Leaders' Summit Resolutions On Education June 11th, 1995

Mr. Speaker, the NIC report is not going through implementation at this time. I don't think it is relevant that we should discuss it in this Assembly.

Question 582-12(7): Response To Nunavut Leaders' Summit Resolutions On Education June 11th, 1995

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. I realize about NIC recommendations on their report. They are not up for discussion. We shouldn't even mention NIC's report in this Legislative Assembly because it is this government's responsibility for the educational development of Nunavut until

1999. Mr. Speaker, I would like to know, will the Minister respond to...

Question 582-12(7): Response To Nunavut Leaders' Summit Resolutions On Education June 11th, 1995

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. My question is to the Minister of Education, Culture and Employment. Mr. Speaker, I was not satisfied with the responses he provided to Mr. Ningark's questions. The Minister was provided with the resolutions that were made in January when the Nunavut leaders met in Gjoa Haven. The resolutions were sent to him. To date, none of the Nunavut leaders have received a response to any of the recommendations that were made there,

other than a letter that was received by the Member for lqaluit. Can the Minister indicate if a detailed response to Nunavut leaders on each of the recommendations and their components can be expected in the near future?

Question 576-12(7): Allocation Of GNWT Staff Housing June 11th, 1995

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. The information I have is that these four units are allocated to health employees. However, some of the health staff aren't utilizing these units, and the education council has been told that it is for some time in the future when health staff increases that they are reserving these. Can the Minister assure me that these units can be

allocated to the teachers so the community of Clyde River can hire the teachers they want to hire, and not compromise? Thank you.

Question 576-12(7): Allocation Of GNWT Staff Housing June 11th, 1995

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. I have a question for the Minister of Housing relating to staff housing in Clyde River. The school there has had to compromise its hiring practices due to the lack of staff housing. Because of the shortage, they have to reject well-qualified and married teachers, and hire couples just to save on housing units. However, there are four empty staff housing units in the community. The community education council has asked to use those for teachers, but they have been told that the units are allocated to health employees. Can the Minister tell me whether it is the policy of the Housing Corporation to allocate specific staff housing units to specific departments?

Resolutions Passed For Training Preparations For Nunavut June 8th, 1995

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. I rise today as chairperson of the Nunavut Caucus to address an issue of some concern to Caucus Members and Nunavut leaders. Mr. Speaker, at the Nunavut leaders' summit in Gjoa Haven from January 19 to 21, 1995, several resolutions were passed which dealt with education and training preparations for Nunavut. To date, aside from one letter to a Nunavut Member of this House, to my knowledge, the Department of Education, Culture and Employment has not responded to any parties of the Gjoa Haven summit on the specific recommendations.

The Nunavut Caucus and other Nunavut leaders would be interested in learning about the progress to date on the consideration and possible implementation of these resolutions. Mr. Speaker, there were a number of recommendations directed to the department, including the suggestion of the immediate appointment of an assistant deputy minister of Education, Culture and Employment for Nunavut and the establishment of a Nunavut education leaders' working group to be chaired by the assistant deputy minister for Nunavut.

Mr. Speaker, as 1999 draws near, planning for Nunavut must address training and education needs as a priority. Therefore, it is imperative that the Minister formally respond to the resolutions with respect to education so that planning can continue in a coordinated and cooperative manner. An initial response from the Minister will be expected when Members of the Nunavut Caucus address this issue during question period before the conclusion of our session. Thank you.

---Applause

Question 557-12(7): Minister's Knowledge Of Newfoundland Sealskins June 7th, 1995

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Will the Minister ensure in the future that there is an actual letter from the presidents of organizations if similar things should happen through his department? Thank you.

Question 557-12(7): Minister's Knowledge Of Newfoundland Sealskins June 7th, 1995

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. The information provided to me the last time I visited my constituency was that they, too, were surprised that there were products being made under their name. However, Mr. Speaker, the Minister is not convincing me that the Minnguq Sewing Group had made these requests. Otherwise, I would not bring it up in this House. That is the reason why I asked if he was made aware that the products that he passed around in this House were made outside the NWT and the sealskin was actually from Newfoundland. Thank you, Mr. Speaker.

Question 557-12(7): Minister's Knowledge Of Newfoundland Sealskins June 7th, 1995

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. If, in fact, they were just samples of the types of products that can be made in the NWT, why did those products have Minnguq Sewing Group labels on them? Thank you.

Question 557-12(7): Minister's Knowledge Of Newfoundland Sealskins June 7th, 1995

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. My question is to the Minister of Renewable Resources. Yesterday, I asked a question about sealskin product prototypes that were passed around last session while we were dealing with the budget of the Department of Renewable Resources. My question was taken as notice by our Premier and my question was to the Minister of Economic Development and Tourism. Mr. Speaker, my question is, was the Minister made aware that the products that he passed around were not products from the NWT?
