Statements in the House

Member's Statement 9-13(7): Seasons Greetings December 10th, 1998

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Mr. Speaker, on behalf of my constituents, I also would like to join other Members in congratulating the Premier-elect, Mr. Antoine, and Cabinet Member-elect, Mr. Roland. I would also like to recognize and thank all the other candidates that did put their name forward for those positions. It gave us hard choices to make in that decision.

To my Nunavut colleagues, those that are seeking election to the first Nunavut Assembly, to those that have decided to retire or retire to move on to better things, I wish them all the best in the 1999 year. As this is the last sitting day that we have before Christmas, I would to say to my constituents, to all Northwest Territories residents, to my colleagues in this House, have a merry Christmas and a safe and happy holiday season. Thank you.

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Mr. Speaker, I believe Mr. Henry raised that same question and I indicated I would reply to him in written form, along with the other questions he had asked in that matter. Thank you.

Question 287-13(6): Closure Of Vital Statistics Office In Yellowknife December 8th, 1998

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Mr. Speaker, I do not have the details of what options are provided. We made a commitment to this government that nobody would be laid-off, so there would be other alternate positions that would be provided to them. Again, I do not have the specifics with me and I will

provide that information and all of the other questions he has asked. Thank you.

Question 287-13(6): Closure Of Vital Statistics Office In Yellowknife December 8th, 1998

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Mr. Speaker, it is my understanding it was part of the reorganization plan with the health services administration being headquarters, with the department being moved out, with division coming on April 1st. I do not know the actual dates of when the decision was made or when the employees would have been advised, but I will get that information and provide it to the Member.

Question 275-13(6): Tuberculosis Concerns In Iqaluit December 7th, 1998

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Yes, thank you, Mr. Speaker. Mr. Speaker, we can take a look at what we are going to do in that matter. Thank you.

Question 275-13(6): Tuberculosis Concerns In Iqaluit December 7th, 1998

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Mr. Speaker, yes, the Department of Health and the Baffin Regional Health and Social Services Board has been working closely right from the start in dealing with this matter. Thank you.

Question 275-13(6): Tuberculosis Concerns In Iqaluit December 7th, 1998

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Mr. Speaker, when it was first learned of the incidence of the circumstances surrounding the possibilities of TB, the health protection unit from the department went to Iqaluit to meet with the Baffin Regional Health and Social Services personnel that were involved in that whole process. They have since stepped up the TB surveillance in the region. They are tracking down some of the individuals that were involved at the gathering. They started community screening in all Baffin communities for TB. Thank you.

Question 271-13(6): Community Nursing Services December 7th, 1998

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. I apologize to the Member for misinterpreting the issue that he was referring to. There has been, as I have indicated in the past, no set ratio or policy in respect to the ratio of staff to residents of a community. We know that the deployment of the resources is currently within the mandate of the Regional Health boards. Recognizing that at the time of the health transfer from the federal government in 1988, the existing resources in communities were the amounts that were transferred to this government and have been kept intact since that time. Thank you, Mr. Speaker.
