Question 220-13(6): Benefits For Keewatin Teachers November 12th, 1998

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Mr. Speaker, in a letter that I received yesterday from the Keewatin teachers, a number of concerns were raised regarding loss of VTAs, the private accommodation allowances, some housing issues and classroom sizes. Mr. Speaker, my question to the Minister of Education is, can the Minister provide any assurances that these benefits will be reinstated or at least equivalent initiatives be implemented to make up the shortfalls? Thank you.

Committee Motion To Amend Committee Motion 9-13(6) November 11th, 1998

Thank you, Mr. Chairman. Mr. Chairman, I know it might be somewhat unusual for me to speak during this debate, given this is a western issue. I should further say that I will not be voting on the issue, I will be abstaining, but I would like to just draw everybody's attention to the fact, to the issue some time ago, when we went through the Nunavut Boundaries Commission and a Member of this House tried to, I guess for the most part, impose changes in my riding, to put another community into my riding without consultation to myself, nor the people that I represent, nor any of the affected communities. I can tell you, Mr. Chairman, I was outraged. When I spoke to the people back in my riding and the other community that was affected, they were not pleased at all that they were not at least consulted. I am not saying that in this case, it is good, bad, or indifferent, but I think if anything, at least it deserves to go back to the people. Let them decide. Thank you.

--Applause

Item 12: Reports Of Committees On The Review Of Bills November 11th, 1998

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Mr. Speaker, I wish to report to the Assembly that the Standing Committee on Government Operations has reviewed Bill 12, Miscellaneous Statutes Amendment Act, 1998, No. 2, and wishes to report that Bill 12 is now ready for consideration in committee of the whole as amended and reprinted. Mr. Speaker, I seek unanimous consent to waive Rule 70(5) and have Bill 12 ordered into the committee of the whole for tomorrow. Thank you.

Question 213-13(6): Update On 1999-2000 Business Plans November 11th, 1998

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Mr. Speaker, the Minister has indicated that the plans put forth to the Interim Commissioner's office are just primarily advice. When might the Nunavut Members expect to see these plans and have some input into them?

Question 213-13(6): Update On 1999-2000 Business Plans November 11th, 1998

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Mr. Speaker, my question is to the Minister responsible for Finance. I wonder if the Minister would give this House a brief update or tell us the status on the capital and business plans that are being put together now and the timing of these? Thank you.

Question 198-13(6): Impact On Nurses Under Hay Plan Reclassification November 9th, 1998

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Mr. Todd, I agree that our employees should get whatever is coming to them and that is on the table. We have made some major cuts over the last few years to staff, programs, benefits, salaries, I am just curious as to where are we going to come up with all this money to pay the employees? Thank you.

Question 198-13(6): Impact On Nurses Under Hay Plan Reclassification November 9th, 1998

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Mr. Speaker, we referred to the nurses under the Hay Plan. There are a number of other groups, of course, that come under the Hay Plan and I believe the only individuals that have been dealt with are the excluded members or government staff, I am not sure if that is correct or not. Can the other groups expect the same type of increases? Thank you.

Question 198-13(6): Impact On Nurses Under Hay Plan Reclassification November 9th, 1998

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Mr. Speaker, I am not quite sure if this question is appropriate given the fact that the negotiations are not completed yet, if Mr. Todd would comment on this figure between $9,000 and $13,000. If there is any impact on this figure, or if there is any relationship, to the pay equity situation, or is it completely separate? Thank you.

Question 198-13(6): Impact On Nurses Under Hay Plan Reclassification November 9th, 1998

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. I will rephrase the question. Mr. Todd, what can the nurses expect once the new Hay Plan schedule is fully in place? Thank you.

Question 198-13(6): Impact On Nurses Under Hay Plan Reclassification November 9th, 1998

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Mr. Speaker, my question is for the Minister responsible for the FMBS, Mr. Todd. Mr. Todd, in relation to the pay equity issue and union negotiations, can the Minister give us some more detail as to what the impact will be once these negotiations are completed, for example on the nurses? Thank you.
