I just wanted to make a general comment on the way historic buildings and museums have been handled. In the case of Baker Lake, we had an organization which was developing an historic area using the mission house. In the last couple of years, the government went ahead and put together a visitors' centre which is very similar to what is being built or renovated in Baker Lake. Somehow the two groups -- the government being one of the groups -- have not worked together, thereby making it more costly for the groups involved to build or renovate the buildings that are being put in place in Baker Lake. I think that when such buildings or renovations are being done, a policy has to also be looked at whereby the communities are consulted before any move is made as far as historical

buildings are concerned. Thank you, Mr. Chairman.

Mr. Chairman, the standing committee on finance has recommended that the GNWT delay further renovations to the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre pending the development of a policy integrating museum development in the NWT. It was also recommended in the 1991-92 standing committee on finance report.

Therefore, pursuant to that recommendation, Mr. Chairman, I move that the 1992-93 capital estimates for the Department of Culture and Communications under the activity museums/heritage, for the project building expansion to the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre, Yellowknife, in the amount of $502,000 be deleted.
